In these designs, the effectiveness of the vane is maintained by using the principle that a wind vane requires a balance weight on its axis (it means that half weight on one axis and rest on the other axis). The most commonly used wind vanes are of cock shape. The cock shape wind vanes are so much common that wind vanes are often named as weather cocks. Also as you hear the name of weather vane, a thought of a cock on the roof top comes into the mind of a person. The interference should be minimized by fixing the wind vane at such a place where no objects are their which hinder the free wind reach the wind vane.

The introduction of self-steering wind vanes has brought a new revolution in the wind vanes. The main purpose of invention of self-steering wind vane was for the boating and sailing purposes. They are not used widely in the gardens or other places but still sometimes they suit the décor scheme of a garden. The wind detection is not main purpose in that case.
